He has been changed and has experienced the horrors of war that no one else can understand. The town is over the hysteria of soldiers returning, have a glorified view of war and refuse to hear the truth. He comes home and finds his town unchanged by everything, whereas he has encountered a metamorphosis of self. Krebs hides out at home when he realized that everything outside is complicated. In the other picture he is in another corporal meaning that Krebs is not the same boy he was before. In some way the war has changed him. He is not able to fit in because everything is so different.

In the story Krebs felt as though he had to make up stories to get the attention of other. Much like the soldiers today, he wanted. The other men from the town who had been drafted were all welcomed respectably on their return. Krebs on the other hand, returned to his home in Oklahoma years after the war was over. When he returned, the greeting of heroes was already over.
Like many of his pieces, the story is much more complex then it seems on the surface.
